If sludge forms from short drive cycles or extended oil change intervals it blocks flow and can seize and bust the exhaust camshaft it attaches to. When that code pops the car can't be driven at all. $3150 doesn't seem wildly off.

Along with other problems in my 2016 Malibu LT, I have also had the popping noise from the rear of the vehicle. My vehicle has been to the dealer several times for this problem. Upon inspection, it was determined that the sway bar was broken. They replaced that along with a rear brake boot that they said was making noise.
