Edit: the bard thing is a general build, a barb, monk, champ, or ranger will serve you a lot better in the frontline. A thaumaturge with mirror and regalia implements is the best marshal, hands down. But it depends on what you want to do as a marshal. Some are backline marshals, and some are frontline.
