Early game was quite tough, the single most important thing to do early game IMO is to get to east liurnia ASAP. Near the artists shack there is a golden Knight that wonders up and down. Kill him and he drops a book that teaches (amongst other incantations) lightning spear. Lightning spear will be a big game changer for a faith build.
