If you do not want to restart, there is a mod that let you change the sandbox setting (assuming you play sandbox). When it says infection on an injury, that just means the wound is infected and you need to take antibiotics and disinfect it. But scratches, lacerations and bites can all give you the virus without the wound ever getting infected. The chances of transmitting the virus are about this: Scratches - 7%, Lacerations - 25%, Bites - 100%

Yes it still sucks when you get zombie wounded due to the game being buggy, but it changes the dynamic so if you are prepared, you can fight off the infection. I play with transmission on (only bites, cooler imho), but with infection mortality set to never. That way you still get sick, but you don't die from it.
