So the upgrade track for solars seems to be weird, I don't know if that is intentional or if I am missing something but it is what it is. Even with a few well-placed Mould-farms, 85k Nanites to get a 209 core damage solar isn't too bad in my opinion. I think it uses the same mechanics as the frigates, so improving your settlements and doing missions for it will bimp it up to a higher class.
