SSD is not a good solution for an archive because it stores data as electric charge in its cells and the charge may eventually disappear when the SSD is offline for a longer period of time ( = couple of years). Manufactuers actually guaranee one year only data retention when the SSD is offline ( = without power). Data on HDD are more persistent.

I haven't had any good experience with agent-based open source image backup tools. Ended up using veeam's backup agent. But since you want to use the pull strategy you will probably have to either install Veeam Backup & Replication Community Edition server or backup to the local drive and have a script on NAS pull it from the machine.
