Dandelions are your best bet if you have the option to plant them. I'm running a ton of mods so I'm not sure if they're base game or not but they're better than grass or haygrass. Either get the cleaning zone mod, or remove the outside from the home area. Crop the empty space from the home zone, but leave it covering the walls/buildings so they will still maintain them. You'll have to re crop any time something gets destroyed and rebuilt though. My rule of thumb is 300 kibble/sileage per animal to last the winter in temperate climates, but the needs of the animal and nutrition of each type of feed means this is only a rule of thumb. That's likely why. I think it bases size on how much grazing is available, not physical size. It doesn't take stockpile food into account, but does show you the stats on that separately on the food tab for the pen.
