Light armor. Some enemies, especially later on, are able to ignore a percentage of armor with their attacks. This is where the extra armor buffer from Heavy Armor comes in handy. With Heavy Armor you can stay at the cap even if your opponent is able to ignore some armor. Light is better.

The Light Armor skill tree in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has a focus similar to Heavy Armor, but there are some key differences that give it its own pros and cons. Anyways, light armor will be better for you as a sword and board because with your shield you'll need less armor, so light is fine in it's AR. So at a certain point, your armor won't protect you any more than it already does even if you increase the armor value further.
