Bard spell list isn't damage oriented, smite will convert them to damage. And TBH, there's not much stopping you from doing both. You can empty your inspirations at combat start and then smite to clean up. Your base melee weapon damage won't be high as a ranged build, but you're mainly doing this for crit smite damage.
