The others left all kinds of unburnt grains in the bore and with low end loads were unsatisfactory performers. Use dacron in the 45-70. I use 4895 (several flavors including "H") under 350 - 500 gr bullets for TD level loads (37 gr under a 405 gr cast bullet). I've also shot quite a few hard cast Laser Cast of 350 - 405 gr with 4895. Suggest you use a dacron filler (1 gr) under the 40 gr load for a start and work up to whatever 45-70 load level your ...This load has been around for more then 50 yrs. I think Lil Gun is too fast of a burning powder for the 45-70. It is a high pressure powder. If you load it to little you cause a high pressure problem, if you load it to much you cause a high pressure problem. Hodgdon does not even list a load with it.
