If you put 3 or 4 planks on either side, you can no longer see and you can no longer attack through it. The ability to see and attack through the window is important. A zombie cannot break it down, if you kill him with a spear. Also, if the planks get destroyed, the zeds don't destroy the window ... You need 3 things to light fires: fuel, tinder and ignition. You had the fuel, but lacked tinder until you used paper. Other paper items and twigs will also work for kindling. As for ignition: notched board method is the slowest and most exhausting. Matches and lighters work far better.
