Palisades/Squaw is great, but the parking lot does fill up so you want to make sure you leave with plenty of time. There will be significant traffic between Tahoe City and the mountain pretty much every weekend. But if you don't make it into the Squaw lots, you can always try for Alpine, as its right next door.

You should be able to get one for $4,000-5,000 easily. At least around here, there are a lot of Tahoes being sold in the high 3s with high mileage.
