When you get the Caestus's from the hag you want to build your Dex and Strength up enough to power stance them. This changes everything.

For PvE, I'd recommend this build . I'm also currently going for the platinum on my first build involving magic. Primary melee with support spells is really fun and works well for getting the platinum. I have a staff in my left hand and a magic scaling weapon in my right, dragon rider halberd has gotten me through most of the game.
