May 27, 2014 · Black Max XR2 150 HP Question. My outboard is a 87 Mercury Black Max XR2 150HP. Motor starts fine, no misses while running, gets on plane fine. My issue is when I am running, motor sounds/feels like its bogged down. The compression range of these motors brand new from the factory would have been in the range of 110-135 psi with a variance of +/- 15 psi being acceptable. There were a few different versions of the 150 Black Max over the model run including the XR2, XR4, XR6, XRI, ProMax and Super Magnum (plus probably forgot a couple).

Re: Mercury 150 Blackmax running rough Thanks for the response John, the engine number is B3498.. so it should be from 1988 i think. The carbs are numbered 1374-5424-C. Top says WH A, middle WH B and bottom WH A ?? The block numer says it is a 150 hp Block, identical with XR2. The flywhell cover says 150 HP. The reed blocks are vertical mounted.

The overall displacements of the 2 engines are different. The 135 is a 2 liter engine, the 175 is a 2.5 liter engine. The 2 engines share the same crankshaft, but a different block all together.
