My theory is that the keys are produced and energized sometime before the car is built. Then, during the entire shipping period, about 6-8 weeks in the case of my car, the keys remain in the vehicle and 'in communication' with the car. This long term close proximity of the keys to the car is possibly the cause of the short initial battery life.
